PERFORMING live has had a huge impact on Bhavik Haria as an artist and shaped him as a person.
Apart from filling him with joy, feeding off the energy of audiences has motivated the British bhajan maestro to create a unique sense of unity through live spiritual music. That special audience connection is why the singer and musician is looking forward to his next UK tour in June. He will be performing music from his new devotional album Sama, along with much-loved classics, during what promises to be a series of special shows.
Eastern Eye caught up with him to find out more.
What has been your most memorable show so far?
There have been so many special moments. One that comes to mind is our London Roots & Changes concert in February 2022. It marked my debut bhajan concert in my hometown. More recently, I’ve just returned from my first sold-out international tour to South Africa, where we performed six public shows to large audiences. I met with hundreds of people I have connected with through my YouTube show Bhajans with Bhavik, which I started during the Covid-19 pandemic.
How much do you love performing for audiences?
I’m always deeply touched by the support of both my UK and international audiences, who take time out of their busy lives to attend our live performances and join me on this mission ‘to keep bhajans alive’. It’s just amazing to see different generations singing, clapping along, and creating this beautiful energy at these big venues.
Tell us about your new album?
My new album is called Sama, a word that honours the essence of bhajans and inspires balance, equality, and harmony. It features seven new songs of virtue with new compositions.
It promises to take you on a soulful journey of transformation, exploring themes of gratitude, compassion, and the liberating power of forgiveness. The album has been produced by UK-based Kaykay Chauhan with lyrics by Ajay Chandaran and is a production in partnership with Arts Council England and Atlantic Electrics.
What can audiences expect from the new tour?
We are very excited about this tour. We will be bringing you bhajans like never before, blending traditional Indian and western instruments, to give a fresh dimension, while preserving their rich heritage. The tour is directed by the talented Kaykay Chauhan, and promises to transcend religious boundaries and resonate universally, forging deep emotional connections with each song. The Sama tour is not just about music – it’s a soulful journey, exploring fresh lyrics and unique compositions.
Do you ever get nervous before going on stage?
No, I don’t. I think that’s because I am excited to share my music with fellow music lovers. Stepping onto the stage fills me with purpose and drive to give my best performance. I channel the energy of the audience to connect them to the music.
According to you, what is the secret of a great live performance?
I think the secret to a great live performance is creating an unforgettable experience. It’s about more than just playing music; it’s about engaging and connecting with the audience on a deeper level. The magic happens when the energy in the room becomes real, fuelled by the collective enthusiasm of people clapping, singing, and immersing themselves in the music. It’s this connection and shared experience that elevates a live performance from good to truly extraordinary.
How much does bringing different generations together mean to you?
Bringing different generations together holds immense significance for me. My journey began by attending bhajan sessions with my grandad and mum. Witnessing people from various age groups sitting in the audience, singing, and clapping along is heart-warming and rewarding. It’s especially touching to see the younger audience reminiscing about cherished memories with their grandparents or older family members, who used to sing these bhajans to them.
You always explain the meanings behind each bhajan.
Yes, during shows, we share stories and meanings behind the bhajans, particularly to help the next generation understand their significance and stories woven into this music. It’s about fostering connections between generations and preserving cultural heritage through music – what my ‘keep bhajans alive’ mission is all about.
What else can we expect from you?
We have big plans for this year. Along with the new album and UK tour launch, I have a few exciting collaborations in the pipeline. I am also working hard with my team to create more special content across my social media channels for my music supporters and fans around the globe.
