INDIAN prime minister Narendra Modi was set to begin his two-day visit to the UAE from Tuesday (13) during which he will inaugurate the BAPS Hindu temple in Abu Dhabi. However, on the eve of that event, he would engage with the Indian diaspora members at another occasion named ‘Ahlan Modi’ (Hello Modi) at the Zayed Sports City Stadium.

The Indian leader invited members of the expat community to join the event, saying the country is “very proud” of its diaspora.

In a tweet in response to a post from ‘Ahlan Modi’ organisers prior to his departure for Abu Dhabi, Modi said, “We are very proud of our diaspora and their efforts to deepen India’s engagement with the world. This evening, I look forward to being among UAE’s Indian diaspora at the #AhlanModi programme! Do join this memorable occasion.”

Modi will also speak at the World Government Summit in Dubai and meet the UAE’s top leadership, including president Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan with who he shares a rapport. The two leaders will discuss ways to deepen, expand, and strengthen the strategic ties between India and the UAE.

This is Modi’s seventh visit to the UAE since becoming the prime minister in 2014. His first visit took place in 2015 when he became the first Indian PM to set foot on the Middle Eastern nation in 34 years. He has visited the UAE three times in the last eight months, suggesting how close the two countries have grown during his stay in office.

At the ‘Ahlan Modi’ event, the Indian PM will address thousands of expats. The organisers said registrations were closed due to an “overwhelming response” from the Indian community to take part in the programme, Khaleej Times reported.

“The stadium is ready to welcome our Indian PM Modi for the event. On Monday, more than 2,000 volunteers came for the mock drill. Today, we are ready to host this event. We expect a huge crowd for the event,” Jitendra Vaidya, from the Ahlan Modi event was quoted as saying by the newspaper.

On Wednesday (14), Modi will deliver a keynote address at the World Government Summit. India has the ‘guest of honour’ at the event along with Turkey and Qatar.

Later in the day, he will inaugurate the BAPS temple.
