THE Indian consulate general in Chicago is trying to trace a woman student hailing from Hyderabad in the southern state of Telangana who is reportedly depressed and starving under financial hardships and has assured all assistance to her.
The woman, Syeda Lulu Minhaj Zaidi, who went to the US to pursue higher education in 2021, was seen on a street in Chicago on the verge of starvation after her belongings were reportedly stolen.
Her mother Syeda Wahaj Fatima has written a letter to Indian external affairs minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar on July 22 seeking his help to bring her back home.
In the letter that was posted on the X (formerly Twitter) page of Khaleequr Rahman, a leader of Telangana’s ruling Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) party, the mother said her daughter went to the US to pursue MS from TRINE University, Detroit in August 2021.
“For the last two months she was not in touch with me and recently through two Hyderabadi youths, we came to know that my daughter is in deep depression and her entire belongings have been stolen due to which she is on the verge of starvation and was spotted on roads of Chicago, USA,” she wrote.
In another update on X, Rahman said a social activist in Chicago by the name of Mukarram met Zaidi and she was admitted to a hospital for treatment. But she left the hospital and was not found after that. The Indian consulate, police and members of the local Indian diaspora were looking for her.
