Prime minister Narendra Modi will on Wednesday (22) inaugurate the new International Telecommunication Union (ITU) area office and innovation centre in India and will unveil ‘Bharat 6G Vision Document’ and launch 6G R&D Test Bed, ANI reported. ITU is the United Nations specialised agency for information and communication technologies (ICTs). Headquartered in Geneva, it has a network of field offices, regional Offices and area offices. India signed a host country agreement in March 2022 with ITU for establishment of an area office. India ITU area office will serve India, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Maldives, Afghanistan and Iran.
The UK will assist the eastern Indian state of West Bengal in creating a technical workforce for maintenance of its EV infrastructure, which is poised to grow at a rapid pace as India switches over to electric mobility over the next few years, officials said on Tuesday, PTI reported. As a part of the initiative, the state government is planning a Centre of Excellence for the maintenance and manufacturing of electric vehicles (EVs) with assistance of the UK government, they said. British deputy high commissioner in Kolkata Peter Cook said skill development in the electric mobility space is an important component contributing to the ‘net-zero’ strategy, and will help in the creation of new green jobs and usher in investment in the EV sector.
The government of the south Indian state of Kerala on Tuesday said the World Bank is ready to provide assistance for its waste management projects, ANI reported. The management of waste will be intensified with the participation of international experts, the state’s chief minister’s office (CMO) said in a release. A drone survey in the landfills of the state will be conducted soon and an agreement to that effect has been reached with the World Bank. Officials of the World Bank met Kerala chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan, and subsequently decided to collaborate on the waste management issues. Taking into consideration the gravity of the recent Brahmapuram fire issue, the World Bank will offer expert assistance and loans.
Gevra coal mine in Korba district of the central Indian state of Chhattisgarh has become India’s first to reach the 50 million-tonne production mark, ANI reported. The mine is under South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL), which is one of the largest coal producing subsidiaries of Coal India Limited. “A Historic Moment for the Coal Sector For the first time ever in India, a coal mine has breached the 50 MT production mark. Congratulations to the team of @secl_cil on getting Gevra mine’s name written in gold letters in the history of India’s coal sector,” Pralhad Joshi, Indian minister of coal and mines said in a tweet. About 700 personnel work per shift in the Gevra mine.
