Indian opposition leader Rahul Gandhi, who is currently busy with his Indian National Congress’s ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’ (Unite India March) in a bid to mobilise popular support, has faced criticism from the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and netizens over a mix-up on the country’s National Anthem.
In a video that went viral, Gandhi, 52, was seen asking the organisers of an event in the western state of Maharashtra where the march is currently happening, to play “Rashtra Geet” (which many contested as well, saying it meant National Song which is different from the anthem).
But to everybody’s surprise, a different song started playing and later it was found to be the National Anthem of India’s northern neighbour of Nepal.

Gandhi, who had instructed “Now the rashtra geet will play” on the mic on the stage, was taken aback and questioningly gestured at a party leader, who called out to the person apparently in charge of the music.
Finally, the National Anthem played out, but someone had chosen the longer, five-para version. And while it was playing, somebody shouted “Bharat Mata Ki Jai” (Hail Mother India). The anthem was stopped.
Sunil Deodhar, a national secretary of the BJP, was among the many who shared the video on Twitter.
“National song to unite India?” he asked, taking a dig at the Congress and its ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’.

Amar Prasad Reddy, a BJP leader from the southern state of Tamil Nadu also shared the video and asked, “Rahul Gandhi, what is this?”

The ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’ has seen Gandhi stopping to take part in cultural events and even dancing with local people.
The months-long campaign, which started in Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu on September 7, will enter the central state of Madhya Pradesh on November 20.
