The United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) representative in Pakistan has said that nearly 16 million children have been affected by the devastating floods in the country and at least 3.4 million girls and boys are in need of immediate treatment to survive.

Abdullah Fadil, the representative who recently completed a two-day visit to the flood-hit areas of Sindh, said in a statement issued in Islamabad on Friday (16) that the situation was too serious in the flood-affected areas with malnourished children fighting diarrhea, dengue and painful skin diseases, Pakistani daily Dawn reported.

He also said that at least 528 children have lost their lives in the floods and that each of those deaths was a tragedy that could have been avoided.

Death toll goes up to 1,545

Meanwhile, data from the National Disaster Management Authority showed that nearly 40 people died in the flood-related incidents across Pakistan in the last 24 hours which pushed the overall death toll since June 14 to 1,545, the Dawn report added.

Officials and elected representatives also said that the water level dropped in Sindh from where outbreak of multiple diseases was reported.

International aid continued to reach Pakistan in the wake of the natural disaster with Japan pledging on Friday an assistance worth $7 million (£6.06 million) and Canada $3 million (£2.6 million).

Fadil said more children would lose their lives if the support and aid were not increased by a big margin.
