British prime ministerial hopeful Liz Truss has vowed to consider whether motorway speed restrictions should be removed if she succeeds in becoming the next premier.
The foreign secretary, who is competing with Rishi Sunak to become the next leader of the UK succeeding Boris Johnson, said at the final Tory leadership hustings at the Wembley Arena in London on Wednesday (31) that she would be “prepared to look into” the radical idea which could see Britain’s motorways transformed into the autobahn system of Germany with zero limit on speed.
The 47-year-old, who looks favourite to win the race against Sunak, said her government would review smart-road schemes, suggesting that she would ban the controversial motorways. She said this while responding to a question on whether she would alter the ‘speed limit from mandatory to advisory’ at the Tory event.
“On speed limits, we need to be prepared to look at that […]. I can’t give you a precise answer,” she said.
In the past, Truss was heard speaking in favour of raising speech limits. In September 2018, she had told a fringe event at the Conservative Party Conference that she would look at increasing motorway speed limits to 80 miles per hour.
Miss Truss has previously touted increasing speed limits, telling a fringe event at the Conservative Party Conference in September 2018 that she would look at raising motorway limits to 80mph. She was the chief secretary of the treasury then.
