INDIA overcame their temporary slip to return strongly in the first Test against England at Trent Bridge to post a lead of 95 runs. Propelled by opener Kl Rahul’s 84 off 214 and Ravindra Jadeja’s 56 off 86 at N0. 7 and a stubborn 33-run partnership for the final wicket between Jasprit Bumrah (28 off 34) and Mohammed Siraj (7 not out off 8), the visitors made 278 in reply to the Three Lions’ 183 all out on Day 1.
India finished a rain-interrupted Day 2 at 125 for 4 after their openers put up 97 runs, thanks to a mini collapse. Overnight batsmen Rahul and wicket-keeper-batsman Rishabh Pant (25 off 20) came out to bat on the third day but the latter perished early to leave India at a tricky situation of 145 for 5. It was then when Jadeja joined Rahul and the two put together 60 runs to give their side a vital lead. Shardul Thakur fell for nought but the remaining Indian tail left England frustrated by adding 73 runs in nearly 14 overs.

For the home team, pacer Ollie Robinson took his maiden five-wicket haul (5 for 85) while the bowler of all seasons – James Anderson – finished with 4 for 54 to overtake India’s Anil Kumble (619 wickets) to become the third-most successful bowler in Tests after Muttiah Muralidharan (800) and Shane Warne (702).
England started their second innings cautiously and were 25 for no loss after 11.1 overs when the stumps were drawn because of rain. They require another 75 runs to make India bat again.
Brief scores: England 183 all out & 25 for no loss at Day 3 stumps; India 278 all out.
