ENGLAND were off to a disappointing start in their five-Test series against India as the tourists bowled them out for 183 on the very first day of the first match at Trent Bridge on Wednesday (4). India were 21 for no loss at stumps, needing another 163 runs to take a lead.

The home team had a poor start after captain Joe Root won the toss and elected to bat first on what looked like a dry pitch with a decent covering of grass. Jasprit Bumrah made a superb comeback to the Test arena by trapping opener Rory Burns in the fifth ball of the match. England were reeling at 66 for 3 when Root (64 off 108) and Jonny Bairstow (29 off 71) came together and held the fort together and added 72 runs.

England went to tea at 138 for four, after having lost the wicket of Bairstow who fell to pacer Mohammed Shami.

The hosts came out to bat hoping for another resurgence but the Indian bowlers were in no mood to oblige. They lost their remaining six wickets for just 45 runs in 15 overs with Bumrah (4 for 46) and Shami (3 for 28) as the wreckers-in-chief. Mohammed Siraj, who came into the side ahead of the more experienced Ishant Sharma, claimed 1 for 48 Shardul Thakur, playing the game as the fourth seamer, took 2 for 41. Ravindra Jadeja, India’s only spinner in the game, didn’t get any reward in just three overs that he bowled.

England would have got bowled out for even less had not Sam Curran played a quick innings of 27 not out off 37 balls at No.8.

For India, both openers Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul were batting on 9 not out as India negotiated 13 overs to score 21.

Brief Score:
England 1st innings: 183 all out in 65.4 overs (Joe Root 64; Jasprit Bumrah 4/46, Mohammed Shami 3/28, Shardul Thakur 2/41); India 1st innings: 21 for no loss in 13 overs (Rohit Sharma 9 not out, KL Rahul 9 not out)
