Seven members of a family were killed in a road accident early on Monday (15) in YSR district of the south-eastern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. The deceased included women and children.
According to reports, the victims were travelling in a multi-utility vehicle when it collided head on with a lorry on a river bridge in Kondapur Mandal area of the district. Five other passengers of the vehicle sustained serious injuries and were undergoing treatment at a government hospital in the neighbouring Anantapur district.
In another incident, an overcrowded auto-rickshaw (three-wheel vehicles used as taxis) rammed into a private bus, killing seven women. It happened in Andhra’s Kakinada district on Sunday (14).
The bodies of the accident in Kadapa were shifted by the police for post-mortem examinations. An investigation was also underway.
According to reports, the vehicle with 14 people on board, either belonging to a family or its relatives, was returning home after a visit to Tirumala, a popular Hindu pilgrimage destination in south India. They were from Tadipatri in Anantapur district and the tragedy struck when they were about to reach their home town.
Traffic on the highway remained blocked for some time after the accident and the police later cleared it.
The accident in Kakinada district happened when the speeding bus hit the auto-rickshaw on Tallarevu bypass road. The bus driver was taken into police custody while that of the auto-rickshaw escaped without a scratch. The vehicle had 14 women passengers of whom six were killed on the spot. One succumbed to injuries in the hospital later.
The seven other women were critically injured and were admitted to a government hospital in Kakinada. The bodies of the deceased were later sent for post-mortem.
