13 arrested for running illegal call centre in Dehradun

AT LEAST 13 youths in Dehradun were arrested for running an illegal call centre to cheat foreign citizens, according to media reports.

The Special Task Force (STF) and Kotwali Patel Nagar Police carried out the arrests following a tip off, ETV Bharat reports.

Police said the accused used to target foreign citizens by claiming to be representatives of Microsoft and Apple, and then try to scare and extort money.

They used to mislead and scare their victims residing in the US and Canada by sending intimidatory pop-up messages.

The messages would claim that they have proof that the victims had watched porn videos or their bank account had been used to indulge in fraudulent activities.

The police claimed they got intelligence input suggesting that some youths were running a fake call centre in the city.

A police team raided a building located on Saharanpur Road and rounded up the accused.

During questioning, the accused said they have been operating the call centre for a long time.

The police seized 13 laptops, two WiFi routers, one media converter, four mobile phones and other equipment from the spot.

Their phones had the numbers they have dialled to intimidate clients, and details related to money transactions were found on some laptops, police added.

The police have registered a case against the 13 accused at the Cyber ​​Crime Police Station.
